Indian Standards Institution

What is ISI?

ISI is the name given to the national standards body, and it stands for Initialism of Indian Standards Institution. There was a need to deliberate on ISI’s functions in the mid-1980s, which resulted in the legislation of the BIS Act 1986. This led to the renaming of ISI to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), with the goal being to guarantee quality certification of goods and support harmonious standardization development, with well-elaborated statutory powers. In 2016, this act was revised as the BIS Act, hence making BIS the National Standards Body.

Since 1965, the ISI mark has acted as the standards-compliance mark in India for all industrial goods. This mark acts as a confirmation that the goods adhere to the Indian Standard (IS) established by the national standards body in India, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Within the Indian subcontinent, the ISI mark is undoubtedly the most known certificated mark. It’s compulsory for all products being sold in India to have the ISI mark. These goods include most electrical appliances such as heaters, wiring cables, kitchen appliances, electric motor, switches, just to mention a few. Other products that must have the ISI mark include LPG valves, automotive tires, LPG cylinders, and many others. For many other products, having ISI marks isn’t mandatory.
